HOLIDAY-PLAN: Get your kid outdoors with SUP

18 august 2017
Teaching your kids water sports can seed a lifelong passion… AND a healthy one. It is proven being outdoors is oh-so-important for kids and improves health compared to ‘indoor kids’.

Examples & reasons why a parent should care are...

Standup paddling is a natural fit for kids because not only can they start young, but the technology has evolved to fit their (smaller) needs. For little ones, its supereasy With a little guidance and encouragement, it’s likely your little buckaroo may just be hooked after the first session. To set your kids up for success, here are a few simple grom-focused tips for learning to paddle.

Stronger bones and lower cancer risk: Today’s “indoor kids” don’t get enough sun and are becoming Vitamin D deficient, causing health risks.

Trimmer and more healthy kids: An hour of play a day is what doctors say is a basic tool in the effort to ward off childhood obesity and diabetes.

Improved eyesight: Recent studies find that kids who get outdoor time have less near-sightedness and need for eye glasses.

Less depression and hyperactivity: Outdoor time in natural setting (even tree-lined streets) soothes kids and lower their need for medications.

Longer attention spans: Children who stare at TV and video games all day have less patience and shorter attention spans.

Better at making friends: Children playing together outdoors relate directly with one another, create games together, choose sides and improve their “people” skills.

More creative: Outdoor kids are more likely to use their own imaginations, inventions and creativity while playing.

Less “acting out” at home and school: Getting kids away from TV violence and video games helps them see that violent behavior does not always solve problems.

Measurably better grades in school: The healthy bodies and minds that come with outdoor play are better able to do well in school.

A longer lifespan and healthier adult life: Doctors estimate that sedentary and obese children lose three to five years from their life expectancy.

TRY DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES
As you probably know, kids get board easily. Try to lengthen their attention span by introducing them to bodyboarden, surfing, racing, river paddling and other creative ways to spend their free time
A word of caution: Children won’t be able to handle oversized boards in turbulent water and are more likely to get hurt. When beginning these more challenging sub-divisions, properly sized gear is key.

A WORD OF CAUTION

Invest in a proper-fitting vest to keep your little one safe. Check the weight and size recommendations on the label. For kids under 5, choose a vest with a strap between the legs. Always remember: inflatable vests and arm devices such as water wings are NOT effective protection. Think: bright colors, reflective panels and non-clog whistles for safety. No matter if they’re jumping around or just chilling, a vest will keep your heart safe too.

HAVE FUN
